Women, Law and Development has its roots in two initiatives. The insights arising from a regional legal services project in the Central American countries of Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras developed into a global effort to identify and link women dedicated to promoting and defending women's rights across the globe. The "Third World Forum on Women, Law and Development,” which was part of the NGO Forum in Nairobi, Kenya in 1985, took inspiration from the Central American Legal Services project. Subsequent work to develop and support regional women's rights organizations in Asia, Africa and Latin America, took its inspiration from the Nairobi Forum.
