Until laws are changed and accountability for their enforcement demanded, people and governments will continue with impunity to violate women's rights. In order to effectively challenge traditions of abuse and discrimination, women throughout the world must take an active role in recognizing their rights and participating in the political and legal processes that confront barriers to equal justice.
Claiming Our Place: Working the Human Rights System to Women's Advantage is a collection of essays about strategies to use the international human rights system to promote and defend women's human rights. The papers explore approaches to the UN system, to regional instruments and mechanisms, and to NGO strategies at the international and national levels. They also examine emerging gender issues within human rights.
